Optimizing for Perplexity & ChatGPT Local Search
Your customers stopped typing keywords. They started asking questions, and something else is answering.
TL;DR AI use for local business recommendations went from 6% to 45% in a single year. These tools do not crawl like Google. They synthesize from sources that already describe you consistently. Fix your entity data, get cited on pages AI trusts, and keep reviews fresh.
The shift, in one number
BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found the share of consumers using AI to find local business recommendations climbed from 6% in 2025 to 45% in 2026. ChatGPT surged into third place for local recommendations, ahead of Yelp and TripAdvisor.
Two more findings from the same survey that change how you should think about this:
- 42% now trust AI recommendations as much as reviews.
- 88% still fact-check what the AI told them.
That second number is the strategy. The AI names you, then the human goes and verifies. If your profile falls apart under inspection, being named does not help.
Why AI search is not SEO with a new hat
Traditional search returns a list and lets the human choose. AI returns an answer and does the choosing.
| Traditional search | AI search | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Ten links | One to three named businesses |
| Your goal | Rank in the list | Be the named business |
| What wins | Pages, keywords, links | Entities, consistency, corroboration |
| Second place | Still gets clicks | Gets nothing |
There is no page two. You are either in the answer or you do not exist.
Become an unambiguous entity
An AI model needs to be confident that “Sicc Plumbing” in Fall River is one specific business, not three similar ones. Ambiguity gets you left out, because the model would rather name a business it is sure about.
The consistency checklist
- One exact business name everywhere. No “LLC” on some listings and not others.
- One phone number. Retire tracking numbers on public listings, or accept the confusion.
- One address string, formatted identically.
- One description of what you do, reused across your site, your Google profile, and your social bios.
- The same service list in the same words.
Machines corroborate across sources. Every inconsistency lowers confidence.
Get cited where these tools actually read
Perplexity and ChatGPT lean on sources they can attribute. For local service businesses that skews toward a predictable set.
- Your own site, if it clearly states what you do and where.
- Google Business Profile, especially your services and Q&A.
- Established directories in your trade.
- Local press and community sites. A sponsorship mention on a youth league site is a real citation.
- Reddit and forum threads where people ask for recommendations in your area.
That last one is underrated and easy to get wrong. Do not astroturf. Answer questions in your local subreddit as yourself, with your business named in your profile, and be genuinely useful. Fake enthusiasm reads as fake to humans and gets you banned.
Structure your site so a machine can parse it
You do not need to be technical. You need to be explicit.
- State what you do and where, in plain text, in the first sentence on your homepage. Not in an image. Not in a video.
- Give every service its own page with a clear heading and a plain description.
- Answer real questions in real words. “How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Fall River?” as a heading, followed by an actual answer, is the exact shape these models are looking for.
- Add LocalBusiness schema. Covered in detail in our local schema guide. It is a copy-paste job.
Reviews are the corroboration layer
AI tools weigh review sentiment heavily because it is the only third-party signal about quality they can read at scale.
Google’s share of reviews dropped from 83% to 71% between BrightLocal’s 2025 and 2026 surveys, with video platforms picking up ground. Do not abandon Google. Do notice that your reputation is now spread across more surfaces than it was.
Keep them recent. Roughly three quarters of consumers only value reviews from the last three months, per the same survey. A model summarizing your reputation is reading the same recent set.
The 30-day AI visibility test
Run this now and again in a month.
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity: “Who is the best [your trade] in [your town]?”
- Write down every business named.
- Ask a follow-up: “Why did you recommend those?”
- Note what it cites. Those pages are your target list.
- Ask about yourself by name. See whether it knows you exist and whether it gets your details right.
If it gets your hours or your services wrong, that is your entity data failing in public.
Go run that query on your own business right now, before you fix anything. What comes back is your actual starting position, and most owners have never looked.
